River Plate returned to play at the Monumental Stadium after winning the Argentine Super Cup in Santiago del Estero. The first dangerous play was a very clear one for el Millonario: after a great play by Jorge Carrascal, Milton Casco took control of the ball on the left side, smashing a shot against Lucas Chaves’ crossbar. In the next one, the away team responded with a play on the right side, but Franco Armani reacted well to Gabriel Hauche’s shot.

Argentinos Juniors made another warning by means of a long-range shot by Javier Cabrera and, then, River had a chance when it was awarded a free kick, but Nicolás De La Cruz’s shot went over the crossbar. Gallardo’s team kept going for the first goal and set up some good attacking plays, even though it found it difficult to make the last pass. Matías Suárez’s attempt from the right side went high over the crossbar. At the end of the first half, Armani came off his line to block a shot from Hauche.

In the second half, River had an unbeatable opportunity at Alvarez’s feet, after a rebound off Carlos Quintana, but his shot was blocked by Chaves. Then, Julián fired a cross from the right side and Rafael Borré headed it well, but it hit the rival goalkeeper’s right goalpost. El Millonario made another warning by means of a shot by Agustín Palavecino that was deflected just off target.

Argentinos had a one-on-one that Enzo Pérez managed to stop after a great run down the field. However, a few minutes before the end, Gabriel Florentín fired a right-footed shot into the far post and secured the victory for the away team. On the next matchday, River will visit Boca Juniors.
