At the beginning, River wasn’t able to take over the match and Fluminense started to control the ball. The away team fired the first clear shot on goal, when Nino crossed a header that narrowly missed Franco Armani’s right goalpost. El Millonario responded with a good play that culminated in a shot by Santiago Simón that was saved by Marcos Felipe; after the rebound, the keeper saved another shot, which had been fired by Julián Álvarez.

Fluminense set the score at 1-0 thanks to a shot by Caio Paulista off a cross from the right side. River had a chance to even the score after Jorge Carrascal made a feint and fired a right-footed shot that smashed against one of the rival goalposts. Nonetheless, the Brazilian team set the score at 2-0 thanks to a left-footed shot by Nenê that deflected off Tomás Lecanda and threw Armani off.

In the second half, River tried to make its presence felt, but found it difficult to come together in the attack. Fluminense smashed a shot against the crossbar and, then, Jonatan Maidana was close to scoring a header. A few minutes later, the defender was sent off due to a reaction. Julián received a pass from Federico Girotti, made a feint in the box, and almost reduced the deficit thanks to a low right-footed shot.

El Millonario went all in and finally reduced the deficit thanks to a shot by Girotti off a pass from Álvarez. The rival team held on and, in a counterattack play, toward the end of the match, scored the third goal thanks to Yago. Despite the defeat, River managed to qualify for the round of 16 as Group D runner-up.
